Click the Account drop down menu, and then click on Privacy Settings.
It will open up the below screen, where you can see the heading "Basic Directory Information."
You will see next to it is a blue text link "View Settings" which I have circled for you. Click there.

The below screen then shows. Notice there is a heading which says "See my friend list"
To the right is a drop down menu which you need to click on.

Everyone - Means people who are not your friends will see your friends list and the number of friends you have.
Friends of Friends - Means that some people that are not your Facebook friends, will be able to see your friends list just because you have mutual friends in common.
Friends Only - No one except your Facebook friends will see the list of friends you have and the number. If anyone clicks on your profile and can see it is private, the friend box will not appear. That person would have to add you as a friend to see your friends list.
Custom - Is where you can set it to certain people or "Me Only." If you select the Me Only option, none of your Facebook friends will be able to see your friends list or the number of friends that you have.
Mutual Friends Box
The mutual friends will always be shown, no matter what level of privacy option you select.
